42ND STREET,the ultimate showbiz musical, perfectly captures the flavor and spirit of the early 1930s with a timeless score by Harry Warren and Al Dubin and a hard-as-nails book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble. But a new production at Drury Lane Theatre, just outside Chicago, is expanding the show’s scope and wowing the critics.
Directed by Michael Heitzman and choreographed by Jared Grimes, this 42ND STREET features jazz-funk orchestrations, a diverse cast, and contemporary “Hooferz Style” tap dancing. Audiences and critics are loving it. Check out what the reviewers had to say…
Chris Jones of the The Chicago Tribune writes:
“The best show I’ve seen at Drury Lane in 20 years! It’s absolutely not to be missed. The idea is fresh and strong enough that it should coax some Broadway producers out to the western ’burbs…
“If you remove this show from its period… the show’s metaphor deepens. Instead of being about a Broadway of 1933, and thus having appeal mostly for nostalgists and purists, it becomes the story of every fragile artist from every fraught era.”
Heidi Weiss writes in The Chicago Sun-Times:
“A downright revolutionary edition of 42ND STREET is now electrifying audiences with its unforgettable score by Harry Warren and Al Dubin… [Music arranger Everett Bradley] has worked a musical miracle by infusing the show’s score with everything from a seamless but perfectly heightened jazz vibe to an electronic enhancement of tapping feet. And all this brilliantly moves the show into the 21st century in what is an uncannily savvy retrofitting of a period piece.”
Alan Bresloff from Around The Town Chicago gives the show 5 stars (highly recommended), saying:
“I have seen this play numerous times, but have to tell you… I found myself on the edge of my seat anticipating each number to see where they had modernized or altered it.”
And Catey Sullivan of PerformInk writes:
“Director Michael Heitzman has reinvented the show with spectacular results… While the switch is sometimes jarring, it adds an urgency and hyper-drive energy… The sonic assault is both unexpected and marvelous.”
“Effervescent and wildly entertaining, this 42ND STREET is a place well worth visiting.”
Congratulations to the cast and crew! 42ND STREET is playing at the Drury Lane through January 7, 2018. For more information, visit www.drurylanetheatre.com.
Coincidentally, the Chicago-area theatre’s namesake, the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London, is also presenting a blockbuster revival of 42ND STREET! Directed by Mark Bramble and choreographed by Randy Skinner, the West End production opened on April 4, 2017, and continues to play to packed houses.
Whether you’re in the U.S. or the U.K., be sure to check out those dancing feet!
