Award-Winning Creative Team Announced For Beaches, A New Musical

Pre-Broadway Musical Plays Drury Lane Theatre June 24 – August 16

OARKBROOK TERRACE, Ill. (April TK, 2015) – Drury Lane Theatre is thrilled to announce the complete creative team for the pre-Broadway production of Beaches, A New Musical, based on the beloved novel by Iris Rainer Dart. Debuting June 24 and running through August 16, 2015, the all new, original musical was written by Iris Rainer Dart and Thom Thomas, with music by David Austin and lyrics by Iris Rainer Dart.

The esteemed creative team is led by Director Eric Schaeffer, who directed the Tony Award®-winning Million Dollar Quartet, the critically acclaimed Follies and is currently directing Gigi on Broadway. Schaeffer also serves as the Artistic Director of the renowned Signature Theatre in metropolitan Washington, D.C., which also received the Regional Theatre Tony Award® in 2009.

“We are extremely excited to announce this exemplary creative team that will bring to life this extraordinary story of friendship,” says producer Jennifer Maloney-Prezioso (Broadway: Spring Awakening, Rock of Ages). “In their hands, the story that people have loved for years will come to life in a new light. It’s like getting to spend another day with your best friend.”

Beaches will be choreographed by Lorin Latarro (Broadway: Waiting for Godot, Scandalous), with musical direction by Brian Nash (Silence!, Kathy Najimy: Lift Up Your Skirt). The production will also feature scenic design by Tony and Emmy Award®-winning Derek McLane (86th Academy Awards, Broadway: Anything Goes, Ragtime), lighting design by Tony Award®-winning Howell Binkley (Broadway: Jersey Boys, West Side Story, Memphis), costume design by Alejo Vietti (Broadway: Beautiful, The Carole King Musical, Jersey Boys), and sound design by Kai Harada (Broadway: Fun Home, Gigi, Million Dollar Quartet). Additionally, Beaches will also include wig and hair design by Rick Jarvie (Young Frankenstein, Les Miserables and West Side Story at Drury Lane).

Beaches follows two extraordinary friends through 30 years of camaraderie, laughter and sorrow. Vivacious, outlandish Cee Cee and beautiful, privileged Bertie meet as children and become fast friends. From pen pals to roommates to romantic rivals, Cee Cee and Bertie’s oil-and-water friendship perseveres through even the most tragic trials. With a touching vulnerability, Beaches exemplifies the triumph of the human spirit and the bonds of sisterhood.

Previews for Beaches begin June 24, opening night is scheduled for July 2, and the production will run through August 16.
